The STORY? Project

There are many ways to tell a story: visually, audibly and, of course - in a book.

Everyone gets information from their smart phones these days but we still all agree that a book is a nice thing - just to look at. Hold. Open. Have on the shelf. Even if you don’t want to actually read it.

But what if you actually wrote it? Would you read it then?

Hullo? Write a book? Are you mad in the head?

Writing is for swots who are good at English!

What about those of us who hate writing? Or can’t spell? Or focus? Or are a bit dyslexic – or just – well – don’t care……

The traditional book format for storytelling has all but become lost to the screen/smart technology but what is there was a way of marrying the two things together?

The STORY? Project aims to encourage and enable a new generation to write and tell their story using smartphone technology, collaboration and traditional storytelling skills to just get the story DOWN. Because guess what? That is how great stories are created.

MOYNE  mixer

The amazing TY students at Moyne College Ballina shared their stories with us at a mixer event in Ballina Library where local writers, Kate Kerrigan. Carmel McMahon. Gordon Rochford and Luke Power presented the students work to a community of 80 of their family and friends. Aside from the essays presented, quotes from the students work were hung from every corner of the room so that quotes, poems and words of teenage wisdom confronted the sudience in a curtain of words. Local writers were deligted at the opportunity to meet with young writers, and  one students was invited to read her work alongside local artists at a charity event the following week (which she did!).  The event, while small in numbers, packed a big punch in the impact it had on the audience and students. Teachers Tara Doherty and Michelle Jordan said it was one of the highlights of their teaching careers and 86 year old retired teacher Moira Nolan said 'I cried through every single piece. It was so moving."  We hope to extend the community impact of that event with a book for the wider online Mayo community and book launch/reading event in September 2024 at Ballina Arts Centre.

WE WOULD LIKE TO OFFER OUR THANKS TO THE CREATIVE IRELAND MAYO TEAM WHOSE COMMUNITY FUNDING MADE THIS PROJECT POSSIBLE AND THE STAFF AT BALLINA LIBRARY FOR THEIR KIND SUPPORT.
